Raghupati Sahay chose the takhallus Firaq — separation — and taught English at Allahabad University while becoming one of the great modern ghazal poets. He drew on Sanskrit and Hindi poetics as much as the Persian tradition, writing the body and the beloved with a frankness new to the form. He received the Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary honour, in 1969.
