Progressive · 1919–2002 · Mijwan, Azamgarh – Mumbai
Kaifi Azmi left a village in Azamgarh district for the communist movement and the mushaira stage, becoming one of the Progressive Writers Movement's most humane voices. Poems like "Aurat" called women to walk beside men in revolution decades before it was fashionable. He wrote memorably for cinema and returned in old age to build schools and roads in his native Mijwan.
