Modern · 1884–1936 · Gorakhpur – Gonda
Asghar Hussain, known as Asghar Gondvi, was a poet of the mystical ghazal and the elder mentor (and father-in-law) of Jigar Moradabadi. His verse fuses earthly love with the divine in the Sufi manner, quiet and luminous, and he is counted among the spiritual voices that renewed the ghazal in the early twentieth century.
ye ishq ye junoon ye hosh ye khirad
sab teri raah ke ghubaar hain mere khuda
dil-e-betaab ko manzil ka pata mil jaaye
is andheri si dagar mein koi diya mil jaaye
hai aaj vo hi jalwa-e-husn-e-azal magar
ab dekhne ko aankh nahin be-naqaab hai
fanaa ke baad bhi baaqi rahega naam mera
ki ishq-e-yaar mein guzra hai har maqaam mera
tanhaai mein bhi saath rahe yaad-e-yaar ki
jaise charaagh jalta rahe shab ke baab mein
mohabbat mein vo ek aalam bhi aaya
ki apna aap bhi begaana lagta
safar hai shart musaafir nawaaz bahtere
hazaaron saal se rahbar bhi hain rahzan bhi
gul-e-tar bhejna mujh ko ki teri yaad rahe
is chaman mein meri bulbul ki bhi fariyaad rahe
